Rome's neighborhoods are full of pleasant surprises and hidden nooks and crannies to discover and visit on your own and with company, offering tourists and visitors every day a range of choices that reveal the wonders of the Eternal City. The city of Rome is among the world's earliest examples of a metropolis, and it has a very complex historical fabric filled with evidence of different eras that overlap, creating a unique and striking skyline. From the Colosseum, through Trastevere, to the prestigious Parioli areas, you will find a continuous succession of open-air monuments from different eras that tell a three-thousand-year history. The perimeter of the historic center stretches all the way around the Aurelian walls and delimits a basin of cultural, artistic, and monumental works of world heritage. Rome is the only city in the world that houses within it a foreign country: the Vatican City. And that is why it is also called "the city of two states. " The city's most important streets include "via Condotti" famous for shopping, "via Nazionale" created after the Unification of Italy in 1861, "via Margutta" made famous by the historic film "roman Holiday" and home to many artists, and finally "via della Conciliazioe" which connects the Italian State to the enclave of the Vatican State.
